Dog Training Tip

Be clear...

Dogs are not born speaking fluent English or programmed to do a sit on command!

Initially, dogs have to be shown what to do, not told what to do.

Why, Where and How

Why choose Surrey Dog Training?

  • APDT registered and trained.
  • Small groups for individual attention even during classes (max 5 dogs).
  • Realistic training environment: we are out and about training in the places you need to have control.
  • Training that is enjoyable and fun.
  • It's the quality of the classes that makes us different.

Where do we work?

With no distractions the world would be a better place! I have now lost count of the amount of time I have heard new clients saying: "My dog can do all the basic commands very well but if there is another dog, person, noise, scent, leaf or bird flying then forget it!". The truth of the matter is for the training to work, your dog must be exposed to distractions in an environment which is as close as possible to real life. Dogs are "situational" learners and do not generalise easily.

If you do all your training indoors your dog will find it very hard to carry on responding whilst bombarded by the temptations of the outside world. For this reason, we do all our training out of doors in a large field in Shamley Green near Guildford. At some point in your training, we will take you on a training walk to check your dog's progress. It is our job to make your dog's training work where and when it is needed.

The British Weather - I absolutely, completely utterly believe that training must happen in an environment as close as possible to what your dog experiences on a daily basis: either in your house if you have specific issues there or outside, where you need to have control of your pet to stay safe. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee the weather will always be kind so do come prepared when you are training. In the heat, dogs will be given regular breaks in the shade and fresh water will always be available in our field.

How do we work?

At Surrey Dog Training we guarantee that only kind reward based methods will be used to train your dog. We specifically work on increasing the bond you have with your dog and use a mixture of techniques and rewards to improve your dog's willingness to comply. My philosophy is simple: if your dog is having fun, the training will hit home much more quickly. We are not here to give you a hard time, we are here to help!
